Neuropeptide
What is Semax?
A synthetic ACTH fragment analogue studied in neuropeptide and BDNF-signalling research.
- Class
- ACTH(4–7) analogue
- Also known as
- Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro
- Type
- Heptapeptide
- Research stage
- Preclinical; regional clinical use outside Australia
01 · Classification
What it is
Semax is a seven-amino-acid peptide made of the ACTH(4–7) fragment joined to a Pro-Gly-Pro tail. The fragment has no hormonal (adrenal) activity, and the tail slows breakdown.
Like Selank, it was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow.
02 · Mechanisms
What has been studied
- BDNF and TrkB: studied for raising brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in rodent brain tissue.
- Melanocortin receptors: researched for possible interaction with MC4R and MC5R.
- Ischaemia models: frequently studied in animal models of reduced blood flow to the brain.
