01 · Classification

What it is

Semax is a seven-amino-acid peptide made of the ACTH(4–7) fragment joined to a Pro-Gly-Pro tail. The fragment has no hormonal (adrenal) activity, and the tail slows breakdown.

Like Selank, it was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow.

02 · Mechanisms

What has been studied

  • BDNF and TrkB: studied for raising brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in rodent brain tissue.
  • Melanocortin receptors: researched for possible interaction with MC4R and MC5R.
  • Ischaemia models: frequently studied in animal models of reduced blood flow to the brain.
