What is TB-500?
A synthetic peptide related to thymosin beta-4, the main actin-binding protein studied in cell migration research.
- Class
- Thymosin beta-4 related peptide
- Also known as
- Synthetic thymosin β4 / Tβ4 fragment
- Type
- Synthetic peptide
- Research stage
- Preclinical
01 · Classification
What it is
Thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4) is a 43-amino-acid protein found in almost all cells. Its best-known role is binding G-actin, which controls how cells build their internal skeleton and move.
"TB-500" is a trade name used for synthetic Tβ4 or for a short fragment containing its actin-binding region. Check the certificate of analysis to confirm the exact sequence and mass of the batch you are working with.
02 · Mechanisms
What has been studied
- Actin sequestration: Tβ4 binds monomeric G-actin, regulating actin polymerisation and cell motility.
- Cell migration: studied in endothelial and keratinocyte migration assays and in wound-closure models.
- Ac-SDKP: Tβ4 is the precursor of the tetrapeptide Ac-SDKP, which is researched separately for anti-fibrotic signalling.
03 · Evidence
Where the research is
Published research is mainly in cell and animal models. Clinical studies of thymosin beta-4 itself are limited, and data on the TB-500 fragment specifically is sparse.
